Our History
The Foundation
R. Curtis Jordan, Sr. looked around the neighborhoods of Jordan City and decided that a constructive program was needed for the boys of the area. After exploring the need with his colleagues in the industrial and civic community, he determined that a Boys Club would be the perfect solution. Mr. Jordan established and led the Columbus Boys Club, to which he donated the original property and building, at the present site on 29th Street.
The Expansion
The Woodruff family donated land on Cusseta Road in South Columbus for the building of the South Columbus Boys Club. A building committee of the Board of Directors and the Junior League of Columbus pledged to raise $50,000 for the new building, and The Bradley Foundation constructed a swimming pool for the Club.
The Merge
The South Club tripled its membership and opened a new 7,000 sq. ft. addition under the leadership of board president, Mr. Madden Hatcher, Jr. The Phenix City Boys Club merged with the Columbus organization changing its name to the Boys Club of Columbus & Phenix City. Shortly after, the East Columbus Boys Club was established.
The Girls
The Boys Club of Columbus & Phenix City changed its membership dramatically and became the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus & Phenix City. The merger allowed these organizations to strengthen the overall brand and, most importantly, to serve all young men and women.
The Teens
In 2003, The CLUB Teen Center was opened. This new Teen Center allowed for the Clubs to further benefit teen members by focusing on their age-specific needs. Money management as well as college and career prep programs were implmented.
The Valley
To better serve the children of Phenix City, the North Phenix City Club merged with the Phenix-Russell Boys & Girls Club organization. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus and Phenix City became what is Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley.
The New East
As membership expanded, BGCCV found it necessary to branch out. The East Club moved to Edgewood, a 48,825 sq. ft. building. This new facility is equipped with a Computer Lab, Literacy Room, Tween Center, Teen Center, and a State of the Art Robotics Room.
College & Career Center
In 2023, the Boys & Girls Club of the Chattahoochee Valley opened a new teen center built to serve the North Columbus community. The center was constructed in honor of longtime board member John F. Flournoy
