Amiya Wright
Amiya Wright was a member of the Class of 2020 at G.W. Carver High School. During her time there, she participated in Student Council and was a member of the G.W. Tigerettes. Amiya earned recognition as the 2019 CTAE Muscogee County Student of the Year and was nominated for Page One in the Ledger-Enquirer. She had been with BGCCV for almost 12 years and was a part of The CLUB Teen Center, where she exemplified our dedication to youth.
Amiya faced many challenges on her journey to graduation. She was given up for adoption at a young age and struggled to find a stable home until she joined the Teen Center. The Club provided her with a safe haven and the sense of belonging she yearned for as a child. She regards her first days at the Club as eye-opening and forever life-altering. She stated, “Walking through those blue doors seemed to open up a fantasy world like the Chronicles of Narnia where I could be whatever I chose to be.” Our staff was dedicated to supporting her academic and personal growth from the start, but in 2018, Amiya found herself homeless and without a place to go, just as she was beginning to feel like her life was becoming more stable.
Incredibly, the Teen Center Director and his wife became Amiya's guardians, welcoming her into their home and hearts, and opening the doors of the Boys & Girls Clubs to her.
Living with her Club Director has provided her with an opportunity to soar to new heights. Amiya says, “This opportunity taught me that fairy tales if given the opportunity, can come true.” She finally has the family she had dreamed of, and it all started with a membership at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley.
She is now recognized as the 2020 Youth of the Year WINNER, and after some debate about her future, Amiya has decided to selflessly serve her country by becoming an active member of the United States Army Reserves. As of March 11, 2020, Amiya has been sworn in. After basic training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training), Amiya will be attending Jackson State University where she plans to major in Biology and Science and minor in African American Studies. BGCCV is very proud of her!
